EUROPE 2011 – Eten! Eten! Mangia! Mangia!

I. am. SO. excited! One more sleep! One more sleep until I get on a jet plane… One more sleep until my trip of a lifetime…

“Trip of a lifetime” might seem slightly exaggerational to some but I have ALWAYS wanted to go to Italy… not just any place in Italy but I have always had this unexplainable desire to go to Tuscany (no I haven’t seen Under the Tuscan Sun). On our second date, D and I discovered we both had a strong desire to go to Tuscany and now we are actually going to be there… first a stop in Amsterdam!

All month, I have been watching David Rocco’s La Dolce Vita in preparation for our trip… coincidentally, we are even staying in some of the places visited on his show. I have also been watching Shaw on Demand movies set in Italy – Only You, Letters to Juliet… (don’t judge). I know the movies are very cheesy but seeing the people drive their convertibles with the beautiful Italian landscapes in the background only gets me more excited for this trip.

I promise to post photos as soon as D takes the pics… I also promise there will be lots of eating and we will post about some of the foodie highlights.

    The Tuscan Wine School in Siena offers fantastic tours of the nearby wineries, as well as great wine classes. It’s a perfect day trip from Florence, too (though affording more time for a visit is great if possible.) I’m sure you’ve done all the research on what to eat, so you’ll do just fine!

    if you are in Florence on a Sunday morning, right along the river by Ponte Vecchio is the most amazing brunch spot.. Noir. They do a Prosecco brunch, buffet style with the most amazing cheeses, charcuterie, other apertivos and a ton of dessert. On top of that, you order your entree off the menu (I went with a ridiculously delicious Steak and golden egg with truffle oil). Brunch runs you around 25E but it is the meal we compare all other lunch/brunches with.

    There is also a very cool place called Teatro del Sale run by the famous Fabio Picchi. It is quite a unique concept as it is in an old theatre and Fabio is actually in the large kitchen cooking. You have to buy a 5E membership to join, and that allows you to pick from either lunch or dinner events. Not sure of the schedule but almost all dinners are followed by some sort of recital from an up and coming artist. The best part is the food though as Fabio cooks the food, and then when a dish is ready for presentation, he stands in a cubby hole and “sings” out the dish description. This is followed by a mad rush from all the tables to get the latest, freshest item. The format is buffet style but not even the high end Las Vegas buffets can hold a candle to the home cooking style of the food here.

      After some flight issues and 10 hr delay (sick Pilot), we are in AMS.

      Will look up your suggestions for Toscana. That brunch sounds amazing… I was sold by the description of the steak and eggs.
